Human growth means increase in size, body, weight, general body volume or any of its parts. It is measured quantitatively.
Indication of growth includes height, weight, bone size, muscle mass and fat mass.


APPLICATION / ROLE / IMPORTANCE/ SCOPE OF HUMAN GROWTH ON SPORTS.
•    By monitoring growth we can predict the adult height.
•    It helps in talent selection.
•    It helps to understand the nutritional status.
•    It helps to understand the related factors determining performance for particular sports.
•    Useful for interpretation of strategies for coaching and training.
•    It helps to understand the effects of sports activity/ exercise on physique, muscle growth, reduction in fat mass, bone                   growth and bone mineral density.
•    Study of hormonal change.
•    Study of human mechanism.
•    Study of human variation.

                                                                       BODY COMPOSITION


It is the study of three components i.e. fat mass, muscle mass, bone mass. There is one more component which is called as reminder mass. It includes organs, nerves, blood vessels fluid like water, potassium, calcium etc.

BODY COMPOSITION consists of fat mass and lean body mass whereas lean body mass consists of muscle mass, bone mass, reminder mass.

Body weight = muscle mass + bone mass + fat mass + reminder mass


METHODS OF ESTIMATING OF BODY COMPOSITION
•    Anthropometric method-  Body  composition can be estimated by using different anthropometric measurement like skin folds, weight circumference, diameter etc.
•    Densitometer method- Under water weighting or water displacement method.
•    X-ray method-  Study of the thickness of the body muscle and fat layers.
•    Estimation of body fat percentage- To estimate body fat in % the following measurements are required. Skin fold thickness of biceps, triceps, sub scapular and supra iliac.
Biceps- vertical folds of biceps.
Triceps- vertical folds of triceps in the middle of arms.
Sub scapular- at 45 degree just below the interior angle of scapular.
Supra iliac+ supra spinal – horizonatal folding above iliac crist.

ROLE OF BODY COMPOSITION IN THE HEALTH / FITNESS
1)    The estimation of body fat and skin fold at selected sites is most important in them. It is found  that athletes who were lean or less fatty but heavy because of a well developed muscleclature were superior in performance in certain competitive sport.
2)    Nutritional assessment.
3)    Athletes required high muscle mass less fat mass
4)    The science of body composition is an important morph physiological (external feature of body). The proportions of these components are different in males and females. Its relative development is dependent on the environment influences, sex, socio-economic condition, occupation, genetics, nutrition and exercise.
5)    Body composition is one of the important component for athletic assessment
6)    The percentage of fat in the body can be estimated with the help of various methods. The essential fat required  in females is 15% and in males below 12%

                      O = WEIGHT OF BONE

                      D = SKIN + ADIPOSE TISSUE

                      M = SKELETAL MASS
